Waste cooking oils
and anmial fats

Frying oils and refined or pre-treated used cooking fats and oils (e.g. by filtration, sedimentation, centrifugation or water removal) rank among used cooking fats and oils of animal or vegetable origin, as long as they are not contaminated with dangerous extraneous matter (such as used mineral oils, PCB, polychlorinated dibenzodioxins, etc.).

Recycling possibilities can be found in the production of total loss lubricants, biodiesel and soap. Moreover, they are used in biogas plants. (BAWP 2017)

Waste animal fats are a part of animal by-products processed in rendering plants. Depending on the category, according to EU animal by-product regulations, there are different recycling options.

Animal fats in categories 1 and 2 are burnt by utilising their energy content. Besides burning animal fats belonging to category 3 in the chemical industry, or using them in the manufacturing of animal feed, they are also processed in biological recycling plants (production of biodiesel) or are utilised as fertilisers.
