Situation: The client wished to increase production, without increasing staff levels. The aim was the production of clean News and Pams fraction rather than a mixed product and to separate plastic containers into HDPE, PET and others. Of high importance is also the flexibility to change depending on market trends and material variations.

Solution: One new system with a number of screens to divide the material flow into 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional materials. The paper fraction is transferred to a REDWAVE NIR/C 2400 unit to remove contamination from the News and Pams and a further REDWAVE NIR 1600 3 way in the 3D line unit separates plastic containers by material identification with high levels of efficiency, representing excellent value for money by positively removing 2 products.

The material size is from 10 to 50 mm and the capacity of the line is from 2,300 kg to 3,000 kg per hour depending on the input material.

Finally, also Mayer Recycling GmbH opted for a REDWAVE XRF/C sorter to sort their different non-ferrous metal streams. Besides their own material, which is produced in their recycling plant for household waste, also other non-ferrous metal streams such as ZORBA and IBA- purchased from other recyclers- are being treated with the REDWAVE XRF/C producing packages of copper, brass, zinc, stainless steel etc.

Nemetz was converting its entire sorting plant. The company has decided for several reasons to convert and expand the existing sorting plant in Leopoldsdorf. On the one hand, capacity needs required this new investment, but also the sorting results of the processing plant proved to be worthy of improvement and were supposed to be brought up to the latest state of technology. For the most part, the sorting was done manually. This sorting process was optimised. Both in terms of sorting result quality and plant efficiency, the plant’s conversion and use of two REDWAVE sorting machines resulted in a significant increase in the efficiency of the entire sorting plant and also improved the sorting depth.

Not all RDFs are equal: Vexor Technology Inc. has opened a new Vexor Engineered Fuel (VEF) operation “made by Lindner” in Gary/Indiana, just south of Chicago.
Lindner had already supplied a Komet 2800 HP for refuse-derived fuel production in Medina, Ohio, the headquarters of the American waste management company that was founded in 1999. Designed and built by Lindner, a plant for the production of high-tech fuels has now been founded by Vexor in cooperation with Carmeuse Lime & Stone at the new site in Gary, Indiana. Lindner has also supplied three stationary shredders – a Lindner Jupiter 3200 for primary shredding and two Komet 2800 HP models for secondary shredding – as well as the sorting and conveying technology required to produce the extra-special “Vexor Engineered Fuel.”

The bark shredder comes equipped with a warning system against foreign particles and a power output of 315 kW.

The new plant includes seven REDWAVE sorting machines for recycling a wide range of material into 12 categories. The infeed material is fed at up to 25 t/hr to the bag opener. The pre-picking station follows, where non-conforming material like oversized films etc. are taken out. The material is then carried to the OCC screen, where large cardboard is separated. The undersize of the OCC screen is fed to a ballistic separator to segregate the 2D-fraction from the 3D-fraction. REDWAVE sorters then separate impurities in the 2D-stream, like cardboard and plastics from News and Pams. The 3D-fraction moves on to the glass breaking screen, to sort out the glass from the other materials. The over-belt magnetic separator sorts ferrous metal, while aluminium is separated by a non-ferrous separator. In subsequent steps the REDWAVE optical sorters separate PET clear/blue and PET coloured, HDPE and mixed plastics from the 3D-stream. At an integrated glass clean-up plant, mixed glass at sizes up to 60 mm is processed and separated from contaminants like stones, porcelain, ceramics, metals and organics.

The infeed material is loaded into the infeed bunker outside the sorting plant, and transported on a belt conveyor into the plant. A first stage of metal separation is installed above the transporting conveyor. Inside the plant the material is sieved, the coarse fraction broken, and the whole material stream passes the second stage of metal separation. The ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals are separated and can be sold on the metal market. Free-of-metal cullet is then screened into different size fractions, and sorted on REDWAVE optical sorters. Impurities such as stones, ceramics and porcelain are separated on REDWAVE IR machines. Colour sorting takes place on REDWAVE C machines, which are equipped with a high-resolution camera system together with unique image processing software. At the outcome, the final cullet has high purity and can be delivered to glass production plants.

The unit is run in three shifts, with two shifts processing the material from the EKOREFINERY, whereas the third shift is dedicated to the SCPW fraction.

The infeed material arrives loose and is loaded into a dosing drum for continuous supply to the sorting system. First the Old Corrugate Cardboard (OCC) screen removes cardboard larger than A3. From there onwards, the stream is divided into two lines, each containing one fine screen for separation of material below 100mm, and two REDWAVE 2800 NIR/C machines. The REDWAVE NIR/C is specially developed for paper sorting and is combined with a colour sorter. The rejects from these REDWAVE units are then sent to a fifth REDWAVE sorter for positive recovery of deinking carry-over. At the end of each line, a manual confirmation of quality is carried out, before storing the material in the dispatch hall. Cardboard and fine materials are then baled and stored before delivery to customers.
