Railway sleepers are among the most difficult to process materials in the processing of waste wood, because they are made of very hard wood and are often misted with iron parts. This poses a particular challenge to the installed shaft systems in processing machines. Lindner Recyclingtech has a mobile twin-shaft shredder for exactly this requirement profile. The machine designed for high throughput rates can process up to 140 tonnes of waste wood per hour. The low fuel consumption is another advantage thanks to the efficient two-tower planetary gearbox.

Lindner Urraco 95 DK has been shredding railway sleepers at Gojer effortlessly for a year now

Railway sleepers are one of the most difficult materials to be processed in waste wood processing because they are made of very hard wood and are often fogged with iron. When the company Gojer, Kärntner Entsorgungsdienst GmbH was faced with this challenge, it decided at the end of August 2017 for the mobile twin-shaft shredder Urraco 95 DK from Lindner-Recyclingtech. How does the 770 hp mobile machine make in terms of throughput, energy consumption and efficiency? Gojer draws a positive first year balance.

“Chopping wood is so popular because you immediately see success in this activity,” Albert Einstein once said. Only at the company Gojer, Kärntner Entsorgungsdienst GmbH in Völkermarkt / Austria is not just hacked wood, but crushed in large quantities railway sleepers and other waste wood. For more than a year, the mobile shredder Urraco 95 DK has been in successful use.

Over 10,000 tons of railway sill shredded
More than 24,000 tonnes of waste wood, including over 10,000 tonnes of discarded railway sleepers, has already been processed by Lindner’s mobile twin-shaft shredder on tracked chassis, which can be controlled with an intuitive remote control and two speed levels. The input material is sourced from Austria and from neighboring European countries. After crushing, the material is taken to a thermal recycling plant in Austria, which is the only plant in Austria to have a special filter system for recycling treated railway sleepers. The Urraco 95 DK, which is designed for high throughput rates, could also generate more output – with higher capacity utilization, ie more available quantities in the market, as Oskar Preinig, Managing Director of Gojer, Kärntner Entsorgungsdienst GmbH notes. “The machine creates – depending on need and material – 140 tons of waste wood per hour,” states Preinig.

First wave change after 900 operating hours
Oskar Preinig knows no more powerful shredder than the 770 hp Urraco 95 DK, especially for railway sleepers. “Railway sleepers are made of very hard wood,” describes Preinig the requirements. “They do not break as fast as other woods and are therefore much more difficult to shred than conventional waste wood. The Urraco 95 DK masters this task with flying colors and is extremely insensitive to contaminants. “Railway sleepers often contain iron plates, screws and nails, which are separated from the material flow only after the comminution process by means of overband magnets downstream of the shredder. “The metal parts in the feed material are an additional challenge for every shredder”, Oskar Preinig admits in this context. “But the Urraco 95 DK does not mind. It is always impressive to see how the shredder recovers the iron parts without damaging the machine. “

As a special feature, the company Gojer emphasizes that in the first year of operation of the Urraco 95 DK only after 900 operating hours, the first wave change was due. “This is a very long time span relative to the material we process,” says Preinig. “Furthermore, the engine is very fuel efficient in relation to its performance.” For optimal utilization of engine power, the powerful hydraulic system is equipped with the Lindner two-tower planetary gearbox. The compact and robust Urraco 95 DK effortlessly achieves the required grain size of 150 millimeters.

Plant Manager Florian Kordesch confirms this and once again emphasizes the stability of the shaft system with a wavelength of 2 x 2,500 mm and four times the breaking and cutting process per shaft revolution. The automatic and load-dependent reversing function also stands for the economic efficiency of the machine, which is immune to interference. Florian Kordesch: “Lindner has kept its promises. In addition, we drove almost 900 hours with the first wave set. That’s an achievement. “


Economical from the start
According to machine operator Stefan Pinter, machine failures can be ruled out due to contaminant entry. The zippers pull the sleepers always uniformly and very efficiently. The Urraco 95 DK also proves to be wear-resistant and easy to maintain and is, in the light of other experiences, easy to operate. “The complete operation can be done from the wheel loader with which the machine is loaded. Only one man is required for machine operation and feeding, “says Stefan Pinter. “The joystick remote control and the touchscreen directly on the machine are really practical and extremely easy and intuitive to use.”

For Oskar Preinig, the investment in the mobile shredder Urraco 95 DK has been economically viable right from the start. His record after one year of operation: The shredder has significantly reduced the cost per tonne.
